Bending the Laws

Forty Years on Two Wheels has an interesting post about the future of transportation that got me thinking. What is the purpose of a law if law enforcers allows people break them? I have never understood why not raise the fine for speeding to $100,000.00 or throw them in jail? If the police want to stop people from speeding, surely that would do it. It would be a life changing event if you were caught.

I think the fines are more of a revenue source than a actual deterent. Excessive speed accounts for most auto fatalities and we have the means to stop it if we wanted to. But convienence outweighs the grim realities and as motorcyclists we are on the front lines of this.

  1. I’m convinced that speed limits exist solely to generate revenue. I don’t know anyone who drives the speed limit. Everywhere I look, people drive at the speed they feel comfortable with, with respect to the speed other vehicles are moving at.

    What I do advocate, however, is police going after drivers and riders who threaten the safety of others. This should not be defined by how fast (or how slow) one is driving. I could drive 80mph, and still be driving safely, as long as I’m driving with the flow of traffic. I could also drive or ride 100mph and still not be a threat to others, if there are no other vehicles or pedestrians nearby. Police need to use their discretion, by identifying the dangerous folks, and leaving us good folks alone.

  2. Have you not read the Hurt report? The average fatality on two wheels happens at less than 30 mph. Speed kills is a misnomer also used by the insurance company to levy higher fees from speeders. The stats do not show speed to be a big factor or the average fatality would be at a much higher speed.
