Quoted in the Wall Street Journal

By James - 3/25/2008

The WSJ did a piece on expensive bikes that I was quoted in. I guess I got to play the cheepskate. Enjoy…

…Mr. Allgood, who is 31 and works in marketing, also writes the blog WhyBike.com and is a member of a motorcycle group called the Bay Area Riders Forum. He says members typically ride inexpensive, “get-around-town” motorcycles, but others gravitate to Ducatis, Harley-Davidsons and other expensive brands.

“People are looking for the image or the history associated with certain brands,” he says, which is fine if it makes them happy. “It’s not my money,” he adds.

  1. I think your quote in the WSJ article highlights the fact that there is a wide range of motorcyclists out there, not just affluent readers of the Journal who can drop $20K or more for a bike. The reference to California lane-splitting just makes the rest of us jealous that it is not allowed in our local jurisdictions. I see people do it anyway when the traffic is stopped completely on local highways.

  4. I am researching insurance companies for motorcycle insurance and am interested to know if you or anyone else out there is familar with a company called Markel? Thus far they are the only one (Markel or Markle) who offers a “funeral” policy benefit to cycle riders. They also have a “med-pay.” My current auto company is telling me that there is no provision for “med-pay” on motorcycle insurance. I want to find out if this is a reputable company.
