Please show support to the family of Gerry Morelock

By James - 2/15/2007

When Billy Lane struck and killed Gerry Morelock a few months ago I wrote an article about the coverage that the media had giving the incident. My main reason to write it was to point out the differences celebrities are afforded in reporting the news.

Well, that blog post turned into quite a firestorm. People who believe Billy Lane did no wrong squared off against people who believe that he should be put to death. Everyone else was caught in the crossfire. Over 700 comments were submitted and I tried to only censor the senseless.

Today Byron Morelock, Gerry’s brother added the 720th comment to the page.

A family friend gave me this blog to read. . .and i wish that I had not.

Yes there are many kind people with class on this site. There also are a number of crual, small minded folks too.

i feel like I need to defend Gerry. He can no longer do that himself. He had a good driving record. He was not “in & out” of trouble either. He was killed by a man with a criminal driving record that blatently snubed his nose at the legal system while driving without a license, speeding, passing on a double line and also DUI. Eye witneses said that Gerry was driving good on his side of the road when Billy Lane started and kept on passing several cars and slammed into Gerry. i always have and always will love Gerry . He brought a smile to everyone he met.

A few of you should be humiliated and ashamed from your comments. I thought that i could endure anything, but now i realize that i may have needed my brother’s strength more than I ever really knew.

Although I never like to hear that people who have read my blog “wish they had not", I understand and feel the same way about those “small minded folks". I believe that discussion is good and while I do not believe in much of what is said I respect that people have a different point of view and should be allowed to express it. It is obvious that those who are bashing Gerry and defending Billy are starstruck and morally comatose.

I did not mean for the post to stir up strong emotions and hope that I, and the biker community can share our support for you and your family.

Please use the comment form below to express your wellbeing to the Morelock family. Keep it civil, there will be no Billy or Gerry bashing on this page, only condolences for the death of a fellow biker and support for his family. RIP Gerry and I hope the Morelock family will find closure and justice.

  2. I am sorry for your loss.

The selfish needless actions of a few can destroy the thoughtful actions of many.

That Gerry died, through no fault of his own, and the person responsible is trying to shirk that responsebilty is another tragedy that your family should not have to endure…

  3. I am not even sure I can comprehend what your family is going through. I know how frustrating our legal system can be. I have to expect that your frustration is multiplied by a million since your brother’s life was taken. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

  6. Byron, I can’t imagine the loss your family is going through. I hope that your family is able to get through this and remember all of the good times.

Please also know that anyone who has two brain cells to rub together knows the real deal here, and how ridiculous it is that anyone try to defend the actions of Billy Lane in this. He deserves the worst.

  7. My condolences to the Morelock family, and to Bryon, for Gerry’s untimely demise.

Justice should not only be done, but be seen to be done.

  8. It is such a shame that Gerry lost through no falt of his own. All of us who ride take that chance to do what we love, it is such a shame, but he lost his life for living it the way he wanted. We should all die doing what we love. My heart goes out to you all and will ride a good one for Gerry.
Praying for you all in Norcal.

  9. My sincerest condolences to the Morelock family. Hopefully this tragic event will put the spotlight on DUI, and more people will learn how utterly stupid and dangerous it is. There’s no excuse.

  12. Suprised, no…disgusted..yes. It does show that if you have the celebrity status, whatever the forum, you are exempt from the repercussions of your criminal behavior. Billy Lane is in good company with the rest of the Hollywood-ites. I am and have been a biker my entire life. I do not condone the specialized treatment for anyone. So what, the victim had some issues with the law. He didn’t cause the accident and HE is the one that is dead. Wake up you bleeding hearts. Right is right and wrong is wrong. If this happened to you, do you think that anyone would care whether you fried or not. Get a grip…He’s getting off because of WHO he is. My condolences to the victim’s family.

  18. Is getting a few tickets for driving 10 miles over the speed limit supposed to somehow imply it’s one’s own fault for being run down by a habitual drunk driver…while they were DRUNK? I really don’t miss Floriduh. RIP Garry and my condolences to the victim’s family.

  19. To the Morelocks, I am so sorry. Words cannot express the outrage and loss.

To Billy Lane, burn in hell.

  20. To the Morelock family - I was horrified to learn how Gerry died, hopefully you’ll eventually find both justice and peace.

To Billy Lane - you need to ‘man up’. Hiding behind the lawyers and smearing your victim is abusive and immature. You screwed up and your screw up cost a man his life. Face it and pay the consequences. Maybe then, you’ll be able to sleep at night.

  21. I have lost a child due to a traffic accident and I know first hand the pain of such a sudden tragic death. It never goea away it does not get better you just learn to cope with what god has dealt you. There is no good ever going to come out of any of this the only thing we can all pray for is that soemone hears about this and maybe will think before they get behind the wheel when they have been drinking. No matter who we are we are not invincable your brother/son lost his life as did Billy Lane as his life has crumbled around him since that one stupid night. One stupid stupid thing effects so many lives.God bless you all and may you all find some peace
